Tokyo 2020 Olympics : Minister inaugurates committee on preparations

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare,yesterday in Abuja, inaugurated a 12-member committee to ensure Team Nigeria gets adequate preparation which would spur the athletes to a successful participation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics slated to hold between July 24 to August 9, 2020 while the Paralympics will take place from August 25 to September 6, 2020.

The Minister while urging the committee to ensure a hitch free participation at the games, said  the committee is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring adequate preparations for Team Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics Games too.

“This event is about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. We have promised that we will try to accelerate our preparations. We have started taking some of these key steps from October 15th (2019) when I met with all federations and their secretaries both the able athletes and the para too here at the (Moshood Abiola) Stadium.

“Beyond that the FEAD (Federations Elite Athletes Department) which is in charge of the federations also sent out a call order for them to submit their training plans. The Ministry as also overtime monitored the performances of our athletes particularly our teams that are going through the (Olympics) qualifiers. We know that D’ Tigress are much closer to where they were to getting the Olympics ticket.

“The weightlifters would be travelling very shortly, badminton are already out for their qualifiers. So things are beginning to fall in particularly the information we need.

In his response the Chairman of the Committee who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olusade Adesola thanked the Minister and promised that the Committee will not disappoint. He also called on the media and other stakeholders to support the committee, assured that they would work nonstop to ensure Team Nigeria achieves success at the competition.

“It’s a great delight to fulfill another landmark issue in preparations for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The inauguration of this Committee today only demonstrates and affirmed your commitment for a successful participation of Nigeria at the 2020 Olympics.

“On behalf of our team members I want to assure you that we will put in all our best to ensure a successful outing and more importantly, to ensure that Team Nigeria that is representing Nigeria are well prepared and be able to deliver their best so that we have the medal outcome that we all desired. We have very few time to do this, we will put in all our strength and experience and energy to ensure that the nation derived maximum benefits from the services that we will render to spur our athletes to success at the Olympics next year”, Adesola pledged.

Members of the committee include; Habu Gumel, Brig.-Gen. Emico Eruwa, Mrs. Hauwa Kulu-Akinyemi and Ademola Are. Others are Dr Paul Onyeudo, Mrs. Toyin Madein, Mary Onyali, Mr Samuel Abiodun Owoborode, Emma Meeting as A Secretary and Mrs. Tayo Oreweme as the Secretary.
